Whether you are a complete novice, new to taking photographs, a keen hobbyist, looking for a career change or just have a passion for taking photos we have photography courses reaching out to all levels of interest and ability.

Designed to inspire and motivate we’ll guide and help you understand your camera, improve your photography and image editing. Starting with the very basics with simple to understand courses you can work at your own pace and we’ll help you every step of the way. From age 16-90+(!) we’re suitable for all adults. We even get you to make your own camera!

Courses are taught in a state of the art facility in Bedford with Mac/PC suites and a studio with green screen and backgrounds by Kam Assi, Director and Lead Photographer at Abraxas Photography in Bedford, which in 2014 celebrated its 20th year.

Kam is also a qualified Lecturer and Verifier and has previously taught at Westminster Kingsway College for students studying Photography BTEC, A Level, NCFE and City & Guilds and has run various workshops for photographers and art lecturers as well as courses at Bedford College.

What makes our Photography and Photoshop courses unique? As a student you’ll receive the best of both worlds from Kam – the advice and knowledge of a successful working professional photographer and also a qualified practising lecturer and former exam verifier.

There are many photographers offering photography courses who may know the subject very well. However there is also a skill to being able to teach and this is what makes our courses unique and so popular.

READ STUDENT REVIEWS:

‘Having ‘dabbled’ in photography since age 14 with film cameras and now in my late sixties I felt somewhat off side in the digital camera age & had almost lost interest in the hobby. I saw a course advertised with Abraxas photo & spoke to Kam who advised I commence with Phase 1 (the starter). Despite initial misgivings at having to start at the beginning, I soon realised that I had forgotten (or never knew) a lot of the technical stuff as from the first lesson we were on a steep learning curve – no time to get bored and with Kam’s instructions ringing in our ears “Turn off flash….no more auto”! Now we have completed Phase 2 and I feel that I am now a halfway competent photographer – I certainly know a heck of a lot more than I did at the beginning and it has awakened my interest in taking photographs, increased my confidence levels and encouraged me to tackle subjects that previously I would not have contemplated. I have also met some like minded people on the courses and overall we have had a thoroughly enjoyable time whilst producing, dare I say it, some really good photographs – that’s what it’s all about !!’     Nigel Davis

‘I have just completed the level 1 course run by Kam and now feel much more confident in the use of my camera. I have much more background knowledge of photography and take great pride in not having to just ‘point and press’. The course is good fun and covers not only how to use your camera but also how to make the best of your photographs, using Photoshop. Kam is a patient tutor and explains everything thoroughly. He even taught us how to take photos using a pin-hole camera.

My camera used to only come out on holidays and special occasions but I find myself using it much more nowadays. It is always handy, just in case I see something I want to capture quickly. Don’t get me wrong, I will never be a David Bailey, but I am really looking forward to learning even more when I continue with Level 2′.     Sue Stealey

“Be prepared to take pictures you never thought you could or would take.”

Kam will ensure you have a thorough knowledge of your camera and photography first, before pushing you out of your comfort zone and encouraging you to learn, in a fun and relaxed way. If you want to learn photography, then this is a “must do” course.   Emma Brewer

Photography Classroom

Q: How can I enroll on a course?

It’s really easy, you select the course you would like to attend and click on the ‘Book This Course’ link.

Q: Are there any age restrictions?
The youngest age to book is 18 and from there you can be 80, 90 or more! (Younger students can join with written consent from parent/guardian, but must contact us before booking).

Q: What camera and equipment do I need?

Any digital camera will do from a ‘point and shoot’ right through to an expensive DSLR. Please don’t buy a better camera than the one you already have before the course starts. We prefer you to upgrade as and when you feel restricted with what you currently have.Remember it’s the photographer who takes the photo!A tripod is the only additional piece of equipment we ask you to have from the very first lesson as this will enable you to cover all aspects of the course. A basic camera tripod will be sufficient.

Q: Do I get a qualification at the end of a course?

There is no formal qualification with any of the courses. We have designed everything for those people who have a desire to learn but don’t wish to compete with project deadlines and large amounts of written work.Depending on which course you choose we have taken elements from NCFE, A Level, BTEC and HNC Photography courses.

Q: How do I know which course is right for me?

  1. If you have not studied photography formally at college you need to enroll on Course 1
  2. If you have achieved NCFE Level 1 you can then enroll on Course 2
  3. If you have achieved NCFE Level 2 you can then enroll on Course 3 and then Course 4

Please check the level requirements before you book either Course 2, 3 or 4 as it is your responsibility to book the correct level.

If you are unsure please feel free to contact us at any time by phone or e-mail so that we can assess ability and advise you on the right level for you.

Q: I’ve been taking photos for years, what course would be best for me?

Course 1 is still the best place to start. We find that people who ‘have experience’ don’t really understand the basics so it’s always best to refresh your knowledge.

Q: I feel Course 2 is best for me as I take a lot of photos what should I do?

You have to fully understand everything in Course 1 before starting Course 2.If you enroll on Course 2 we cannot go back and teach individuals on things that are covered during Course 1. If you are struggling with the content you will be asked to leave the course without refund.

Q: I have a camera but have no idea how to use it?

That’s great! During the first session on Course 1 you’ll be well on your way!

Q: Do I have to have my own camera?

Yes you have to bring your own camera as we don’t supply cameras.

Q: Can I do the course on a mobile phone camera?

Yes and no. You will find that you will be severely restricted with the tasks on a mobile phone.

Q: What do I need to bring to the lessons?

Camera, tripod, notepad, pen, a drink and something to eat if you think you’ll get hungry!Keep an eye on the weather as you will be going outside with your camera, so make sure you are comfortable and able to keep warm and dry outside.

Q: If I leave at any point during the course do I get a refund?

No. Unfortunately we cannot refund all or part of your course fee should you decide to leave during the course. Please note there are absolutely no exceptions.

Q: I’m afraid I’ll be out of my depth, not understand anything and everyone will be much better than me. What should I do?

The courses have been designed for you to learn and enjoy at your own pace. Kam will be there to inspire and motivate you regardless of your ability. You really need not worry. One reason for introducing these courses is that students will learn without the need to produce written work or have deadlines. There is no Pass or Fail.

Q: I’m no good with computers, I don’t even know how to turn one on!

If you don’t know how to turn a computer on then we’ll show you what to do. Regardless of your ability and previous knowledge (or lack of) you’ll be fine.

Q: I’d like to enrol on a Photoshop course, which one is right for me?

Our Photoshop courses are designed specifically for photographers not for general graphics. Course 1 begins with the very basics for those who have no prior knowledge. If you have completed the NCFE Level 1 Photography course then you need to enroll on our second Photoshop course.

Q: I have more questions, is there someone I can ask?

Yes of course you can. Email : info@abraxasphoto.co.uk or Phone: 01234 841912
